Germany News: Bavarian Police Arrest Suspected Spies

On Thursday, April 23, 2026, Bavarian law enforcement apprehended two individuals suspected of espionage. The arrests occurred during a routine inspection on the A6 autobahn near Neuendettelsau, a small town outside Nuremberg, on April 12. Both men, a 45-year-old from Latvia and a 43-year-old from Ukraine, were found in possession of “various suspicious objects” including counterfeit documents, cameras, drones, GPS trackers, radios, and multiple mobile phones with SIM cards.

Authorities allege the pair were acting on behalf of an entity outside Germany, aiming to conduct sabotage and acquire false documents. Neither man resides in Germany and remains in custody pending trial. Both countries host Russian-speaking communities, some of whom align with Russian interests.

Frankfurt Airport’s New Terminal 3 Unveiled

The opening of Frankfurt Airport’s Terminal 3 marked a significant development on Thursday. The terminal, which took 10 years to build and slightly exceeded its budget of €4 billion, officially welcomed passengers the day prior. The first flight to land at the new terminal was a China Southern Airlines service from Shenyang, as part of a transition that moves 57 airlines from Terminal 2 to Terminal 3, which will soon be decommissioned for renovation.

Terminal 3 is designed to accommodate approximately 19 million travelers annually, with potential for expansion to 25 million. Its completion, delayed partly by the pandemic, has been celebrated as a milestone in Germany’s infrastructure.

Obama Commends Climate Activist Luisa Neubauer

Former U.S. President Barack Obama highlighted German climate advocate Luisa Neubauer in a video message for Earth Day. The 30-year-old, who participated in the Obama Foundation Leaders program in 2020, is described as a beacon of youthful initiative. “She decided not to wait for someone else to make change,” Obama noted, “but instead took action and made an impact herself.”

“Neubauer is an example of a young person who gives me hope,” Obama added.

Neubauer, a leading figure in the Fridays for Future movement, was pictured on a boat in Antarctica, which she called “a place of hope.” She emphasized that the continent’s international treaty-based protection stands out as a “quite utopian” model in today’s geopolitical landscape.

Deportation Delay at Berlin Brandenburg Airport

At Berlin Brandenburg Airport, a man was removed from a deportation flight on Thursday after causing disruptions during pre-flight checks. According to dpa, the individual grew agitated in the rear of an A320 aircraft, prompting him to be escorted off. A safety slide was deployed during the incident, evacuating all 161 passengers. The flight’s capacity was reduced by 51 to 110 passengers, resulting in a two-and-a-half-hour delay to Vienna.

Such interruptions have occurred 1,593 times in the past year, often due to medical emergencies, resistance, staff shortages, missing paperwork, or self-harm. In 2025, Germany deported 22,787 individuals, 19,987 of whom were sent by air.
