Coventry owner not worried by Lampard links with Chelsea
Coventry Owner Not Concerned by Lampard’s Potential Return to Chelsea
Coventry City’s owner, Doug King, has expressed confidence that fans need not be concerned about Frank Lampard’s possible move back to Chelsea, despite recent speculation linking the former Blues midfielder to a return at Stamford Bridge. Lampard’s tenure at the club has been marked by a dramatic resurgence, culminating in a top-flight return in August 2024—a milestone achieved after 25 years without promotion.
Lampard’s Leadership Sparks Speculation
Lampard’s success in guiding Coventry to the Championship title was sealed with a 5-1 victory over Portsmouth on Tuesday night. This win came just four days after a crucial draw at Blackburn ensured their promotion. However, the coach’s reputation has drawn attention again following the dismissal of Chelsea’s manager, Liam Rosenior, on Wednesday evening, with rumors suggesting Lampard could be next in line for a return to London.
“Frank has done a fantastic job. It’s been an incredible 18 months for us and for him. I said to him, ‘Don’t underestimate how tough what you’ve just achieved is to do.’”
King acknowledged that Lampard’s achievements have naturally attracted interest, calling the football landscape a “merry-go-round” where managers often switch clubs. Despite this, he emphasized the current team’s contentment: “He’s in a happy place, and I’m sure he’s reflecting on his success. Everyone is going to be linked with everything, but I’m not worried about what may or may not happen for the head coach.”
Club’s Strategic Approach to the Premier League
King revealed that Coventry has been preparing for life in the Premier League for some time, but stressed that simply investing heavily in new signings would not guarantee success. “We’ve been analyzing our goals since October, and we’re ahead of the pack. We look for value, not just cost, when building our squad.”
“A very expensive footballer might still be value. There are plenty of players who cost a fortune but don’t deliver. We’ll do what we need to, but don’t assume staying in the league depends solely on how much money you spend.”
With the Sky Blues set to face Wrexham in a key match, King expressed hope for a “massive celebration” with fans. The club’s plans include the We Are Back: Live event, featuring a bus parade through the city on 4 May, as they prepare for their first Premier League season since 2000-01. King, who purchased the club in January 2023, described his role as more “party planner” than chairman, highlighting the shared excitement of the team and supporters.
Despite the challenges of a new era, King remains optimistic: “It’s exciting, it’s a challenge. We had to overcome the Championship, and now the next step is to see what we can do in the top league.”
