England’s Hamilton Wins First European Tour Title
South African Open Marks Historic Victory for the 26-Year-Old
Esme Hamilton secured her first European Tour triumph at the 2024 South African Women’s Open, overcoming a strong challenge from compatriot Cara Gainer. The event in Cape Town saw Hamilton finish two strokes ahead of Gainer, who had entered the final round in third place. Hamilton’s performance was marked by resilience, as she recovered from a tough front nine to maintain her lead.
Hamilton’s final round score of -15 placed her at the top of the leaderboard, with Slovenia’s Pia Babnik and other competitors trailing behind. Despite a bogey on the third hole and a double bogey on the ninth, she stabilized her game later in the tournament, carding a two-under 71. This win marks a significant milestone, as it is her first European Tour title after 22 attempts.
Before this victory, Hamilton had achieved just two top-10 finishes on the European Tour. Gainer, who was one stroke behind the leaders, finished with a 72, falling short of the title. Meanwhile, in men’s golf, Bernd Wiesberger ended a five-year wait for a DP World Tour victory by claiming the China Open in Shanghai. The Austrian finished at 19-under, three shots ahead of Adrian Otaegui.
Hamilton’s success highlights her consistency and ability to perform under pressure, setting the stage for future achievements. The South African Open’s final round proved decisive, with Hamilton’s steady play securing her place in history.
