Gunman was likely targeting Trump team, says official
Following an attempted attack at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, officials have indicated the suspect was targeting US President Donald Trump and members of his administration. The incident, which occurred at the Washington Hilton hotel, has sparked further investigation into the motives of the accused. The suspect, a 31-year-old California native, was a guest at the venue and was later taken into custody.
Trump’s Response Highlights Security Concerns
During a press conference, President Trump emphasized the importance of the new State Ballroom under construction at the White House, suggesting it could have prevented the attack. “This event would never have happened with the Militarily Top Secret Ballroom currently being built,” he stated on social media, later reiterating the sentiment to Fox News. “It cannot be built fast enough!” Trump added, highlighting his belief in the structure’s role in enhancing security.
“Law enforcement did their jobs,” remarked Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, noting the suspect was apprehended and “failed” in his attempt to carry out the attack. Blanche also revealed the accused had traveled across the country, taking a train from California to Chicago and then to Washington before arriving at the hotel.
Background of the Alleged Perpetrator
The suspect, according to federal records, was identified as a master’s graduate with a professional background in tutoring and video game development. His LinkedIn profile reportedly aligned with his name and photograph, showcasing a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering followed by a master’s in computer science. He had been working as a tutor for six years, aiding students in their academic pursuits, and had previously developed a video game focused on molecular chemistry available on Steam.
Despite his educational and professional achievements, the suspect’s actions raised questions about potential ideological motivations. Campaign finance filings showed he had donated $25 to Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in 2024, though his intentions remain under scrutiny.
Details of the Attack and Security Measures
The gunman attempted to breach the ballroom at the Washington Hilton, where the dinner was held. Police intervened, resulting in a chaotic scene with gunfire. Trump was swiftly removed from the stage, and attendees scrambled for cover. The suspect was armed with a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives, though a Secret Service officer was struck by a “powerful gun” during the incident. Fortunately, the officer was protected by a bulletproof vest.
“It does appear that he did in fact set out to target folks who work in the administration, likely including the president,” said Blanche, speaking to NBC. The suspect is said to have acquired the firearms in question within the last couple of years, according to federal officials.
Authorities are now examining the suspect’s communications, digital records, and writings to determine his motive. While he was initially evaluated in a hospital, he has since been questioned and is scheduled for arraignment on Monday on charges of firearm use during a violent crime and assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon. The Washington Hilton, a historic venue, is also notable for hosting the 1975 assassination attempt on then-president Ronald Reagan, which he survived despite severe injuries.
