Korda returns to world number one with Chevron win
Reclaiming the top spot in the world rankings
Nelly Korda secured a commanding five-stroke triumph at the Chevron Championship, marking her return to the summit of the world rankings. The victory not only solidified her position as the number one player but also extended her career tally of LPGA Tour victories to 17. Her performance in the final round was pivotal, as she maintained a significant lead over the competition.
Path to the title
With a second Chevron Championship title in three years, Korda’s success ensured she surpassed Jeeno Thitikul in the rankings following the Thai’s failure to qualify. The American player equaled the 54-hole scoring record on Saturday, though she fell just two strokes short of the tournament’s overall record of 20 under par. Reflecting on the challenge, Korda shared her thoughts with NBC Sports.
“That was a hard weekend. Honestly, having that big of a lead, it’s not easy. It was definitely one of the hardest things I’ve had to do mentally. I have an amazing support system. An amazing family who are right behind me. An amazing caddie who is on the bag and I’m just happy to get it done.”
Major milestones
Korda’s win adds to her collection of major titles, bringing her total to three. This achievement includes her victory at the Women’s PGA Championship in 2021. Her performance throughout the tournament showcased resilience, as she began the final day with a strong start but faced challenges on the back nine.
Other contenders
Thailand’s Patty Tavatanakit started the day in second place, five strokes behind Korda, but failed to close the gap with a two-under-par 70. Meanwhile, Lydia Woad from England and Chloe Hull also made notable progress, finishing at -6 and -5 respectively. The full leaderboard reflects the competitive landscape of the event, highlighting Korda’s dominant run.
