Peaty on his return to the pool, LA 2028 and Gordon Ramsay’s speech
Peaty’s Comeback and Ambitions for LA 2028
Adam Peaty, the three-time Olympic gold medalist in the 100m breaststroke, is set to return to competitive action at the London Aquatics Centre this week. His journey includes a relay gold from the 2016 and 2021 Games, but the 2022 Paris Olympics marked a turning point. After securing a silver medal in the French capital, Peaty nearly walked away from the sport before deciding to push forward for a potential fourth Olympic bid in Los Angeles 2028.
A New Chapter in His Career
Peaty’s decision to compete again followed the announcement that the 50m breaststroke event would be included in the 2028 Olympic schedule. This addition offers him a chance to claim another individual gold, building on his 2016 and 2021 100m victories. The British Championships, where he will race both distances, serve as a critical test before targeting major events like the Commonwealth Games, World Championships, and European Championships.
“The next two years will be the toughest phase of my career,” Peaty shared during a BBC Breakfast interview. “There might not be many wins, but the one that truly matters is the LA Games.”
Despite mixed results in recent months, Peaty remains focused on preparing for the challenges ahead. He described the Olympics as the pinnacle of his sport, stating, “That’s the event that excites me. It’s the one I dream of every day.”
Paris Setback and Mental Resilience
Peaty’s 2022 Olympic campaign was derailed by coronavirus and a fierce rivalry with Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi, who claimed gold in the 50m breaststroke. “I gave everything I had,” Peaty reflected. “I don’t think I deserved a silver.”
Earlier in the year, he revealed struggles with injury and mental health, calling the period a “self-destructive spiral.” However, he insists he has moved past those challenges, focusing instead on the strategic preparation needed for LA 2028. “Can we avoid burnout? Absolutely,” he said. “It’s about gathering experience to peak at the right time.”
Family Life and Gordon Ramsay’s Influence
Peaty’s personal life has also seen progress, with his marriage to model Holly Ramsay—daughter of TV chef Gordon Ramsay—occurring in December. The union has brought stability, he explained, adding, “The life we’ve built together gives me incredible peace. It also lets me chase this incredible thing called sport.”
“What makes this path easier is having my wife, son, and friends by my side,” Peaty said. “Swimming humbles you, but it’s the support around me that keeps me going.”
He also acknowledged the role of his in-laws, Gordon Ramsay and Holly, in his athletic pursuits. Peaty completed his first triathlon with Team Ramsay in August 2022, but he humorously noted that Gordon’s wedding speech might have been the standout moment. “Gordon’s toast was hard to beat—he never struggles to make a room laugh.”
Peaty’s return to the pool marks a significant step in his quest for more Olympic glory, blending personal growth with competitive ambition. The London Aquatics Centre will host his latest test, setting the stage for the challenges of the road to LA 2028.
