Superb Murphy beats Xiao with a session to spare
Shaun Murphy, a former World Championship winner, triumphed over China’s Xiao Guodong 13-3 in the 2026 World Championship, marking his entry into the quarter-finals. The 43-year-old eighth seed secured his victory with a session to spare, after leading 6-2 overnight and then winning seven of the eight frames in Friday’s early session.
With a 6-2 lead from the first day, Murphy dominated the second session, showcasing his skill through breaks of 93, 66, 103, 69, 115, and 103. This performance set up a last-eight encounter against the winner of the all-Chinese match featuring reigning champion Zhao Xintong and Ding Junhui. The quarter-final stage is set to begin on Tuesday and conclude on Wednesday.
Friday’s evening session will see the second leg of Barry Hawkins’ match against Mark Williams, with the screen raised to ensure the entire crowd can watch the action. Murphy’s victory highlights his consistency in high-stakes play, as he previously reached the quarter-finals in 2021, only to fall to Mark Selby in the final.
“I’m really pleased with how I played. I’m delighted,” said Murphy. “It does not happen often that you win with a session to spare, because everyone is so good.”
“I would not say I’m desperate to win another World Championship, but it is close. “It’s 21 years ago since that clueless 22-year-old came here and nicked the trophy from everyone. Since then I’ve been trying my hardest to get the trophy again. It’s not been through the lack of trying.”
Murphy remains confident in his abilities, emphasizing his passion for the game. “I’m loving the game, loving practice and still think I can get better,” he added. “The best days are still ahead of me.”
