German News: Teacher Group Urges Action Over Pupil Violence
Escalating incidents of aggression in school settings have prompted a coalition of educators to demand immediate intervention. The German Teachers’ Association (DL) highlighted a sharp rise in assaults on staff, urging authorities to address the issue through enhanced support and preventive strategies.
Rescue Efforts for Stranded Whale
Germany’s environment ministry has endorsed a last-minute operation to save a humpback whale that has been trapped on the Baltic Sea coast for over two weeks. The plan involves using inflatable supports to lift the animal and pontoons to relocate it to open waters. While the whale is still alive, officials acknowledge its critical condition, stating that the rescue represents a novel opportunity to return it to its natural environment.
“We have decided that a rescue of the whale, while it is still alive, can go ahead,” said Till Backhaus, environment minister for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Two weeks prior, local authorities had declared the animal’s survival unlikely after it floundered for more than a week. The whale was initially spotted on a sandbank near Lübeck on March 23, freed itself temporarily, and later became stranded again in an inlet near the island of Poel.
Greens Propose Nationwide Speed Limit
As fuel costs climb due to tensions in the Iran war, the Green Party has introduced a proposal to cap speeds on all autobahns at 130 km/h (80 mph). This measure aims to reduce energy use, lower transportation expenses, and enhance road safety. A draft law is set to be discussed in the Bundestag today.
The initiative contrasts with Germany’s current policy of unregulated stretches on its highway network, a tradition often justified by cultural and economic arguments. The Greens argue that reducing speeds will directly cut emissions and stabilize fuel demand, calling it a “matter of common sense” for sustainable progress.
“This is a fast and effective way to reduce fuel demand,” said Green co-leader Katharina Dröge.
Supporters include environmental advocates, civil society organizations, and transport groups, who emphasize that higher speeds increase fuel consumption due to aerodynamic factors. The proposal lacks inclusion in the existing coalition agreement between Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s CDU/CSU bloc and the Social Democrats.
Roots of School Violence
DL President Stefan Dull attributed the surge in student aggression to multiple factors, including domestic violence, social media influence, and societal role models like former US President Donald Trump. He noted a 70% increase in reported bodily harm cases at schools in 2024, with over 1,300 incidents compared to previous annual totals.
Dull warned that verbal abuse and physical attacks are becoming more frequent, affecting all levels of education. While special needs schools face particular challenges, he stressed that the problem spans the entire system. He called for stronger measures, such as hiring more social workers and fostering student relationships to curb disrespectful conduct.
Guten Tag from the DW newsroom in rainy Bonn. As we await updates on the whale rescue near Wismar, other developments include the growing pressure on educators and the Greens’ push for a unified speed limit across major highways.
