Trump Uninjured After Shooting at Correspondents’ Dinner

President Donald Trump was taken to safety following an incident involving gunfire at the Washington Hilton hotel, where journalists and celebrities were present for the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner. A suspect has been detained by authorities, and updates are expected as the situation unfolds. The event, held on Saturday, marked Trump’s first attendance at the dinner while in office. Notably, he became the first president to skip the gathering, breaking with tradition. Additionally, this year’s ceremony did not feature a comedian, a departure from past years when performers typically mocked the administration in front of media leaders.

A 31-year-old man from California was arrested at the scene, according to police. The Associated Press noted he was a master’s graduate, tutor, and hobbyist video game developer, based on a LinkedIn profile matching his name and photo. His educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a master’s in computer science. For six years, he worked as a tutor assisting students aiming for higher education, while also creating a game focused on molecular chemistry, available on Steam. Federal campaign finance records show he contributed $25 (€21) to Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in 2024.

“Tonight, a coward attempted to create a national tragedy. He underestimated the protective capabilities of the US Secret Service and was stopped at first contact,” said Matthew Quinn, the US Secret Service deputy director. He added, “The strength of our layered security posture was evident, with a myriad of countermeasures still ahead.”

The Secret Service emphasized that the attacker’s actions were thwarted before escalating. While the motive remains unclear, the agency confirmed the suspect was targeting Trump administration officials, as reported by CBS News. The shooter reportedly told law enforcement he aimed to harm the president, though it’s not yet confirmed if he included Trump himself in his targets. This incident follows earlier threats against the president, including a July 2024 attack at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a bullet struck his right ear. Another armed individual was later spotted at Mar-a-Lago Golf Club, where Trump was playing, and was shot dead by security in February.

World leaders praised the outcome and condemned the violence. Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum, who has had a strained relationship with Trump, tweeted that the president and his wife were safe, stating, “Violence must never be the way.” Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney echoed similar sentiments, expressing support for Trump’s well-being. The event also drew attention to the security challenges of the Washington Hilton, which hosted a failed assassination attempt on former President Ronald Reagan in 1981. Despite these risks, the Secret Service highlighted its successful response, underscoring the effectiveness of its multi-layered protocols.
