Households could get free electricity for doing washing on sunny weekends

A new initiative allows UK households and businesses to access free or discounted electricity from their energy providers during times of surplus power, such as sunny weekends. This change comes after the National Energy System Operator (NESO) introduced an updated Demand Flexibility Service, which was approved by the industry regulator Ofgem in late March.

Encouraging Energy Use During High Supply

Previously, energy companies incentivized customers to shift consumption away from peak hours. Now, they can also promote increased usage when weather patterns lead to abundant energy supply. NESO highlighted that summer months often see reduced demand due to longer days and warmer temperatures, while solar power generation rises.

“The complexity of managing the system during low-demand periods is growing, and we may need to deploy more tools more frequently than in past summers,” NESO stated.

These surplus periods are becoming more frequent, according to NESO’s research. The updated scheme rewards customers for using appliances like washing machines or dishwashers, and charging electric vehicles, when renewable energy is plentiful and demand is low. Participation requires smart meters and supplier involvement.

Eligible participants can receive benefits such as reduced rates or points redeemable for gift cards. Companies like British Gas, Equiwatt, and Octopus Energy have already joined the program. NESO emphasized the importance of this system in ensuring grid stability and preventing wasted energy during seasonal fluctuations.
