Wins and challenges: Zohran Mamdani’s first 100 days in office

On a day filled with anticipation, Zohran Mamdani, New York City’s youngest mayor in over a century, addressed a crowd at the Knockdown Center in Queens. The venue, once a factory, buzzed with supporters holding signs like “Pothole Politics” and “Childcare for All.” Mamdani emphasized his accomplishments, stating, “Nothing is too big for New York City to take on,” while adding, “Over the past 14 weeks, we have proved that there is no task too small either.” His achievements include securing $1.2bn for childcare and addressing road infrastructure by fixing 100,000 potholes.

Despite these successes, several key initiatives remain unfulfilled. Justin de Benedictis-Kessner, a public policy professor at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, noted that Mamdani has focused on issues with broad public backing. “He’s choosing topics that he believes can rally support,” de Benedictis-Kessner explained. “Rather than starting with divisive topics, he’s targeting causes with wider appeal.”

Political Dynamics with Trump

Before his election, Mamdani and President Donald Trump were locked in a heated exchange. Trump labeled the democratic socialist as a “communist,” while Mamdani vowed to stand firm against him. However, their relationship has softened since Mamdani assumed office. The two met a few times, with Trump expressing support, saying he would “cheer” for Mamdani. Their discussions centered on New York’s affordability crisis, and they shared a photo op during the meeting.

Lincoln Mitchell, from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, observed that Mamdani has navigated a delicate balance. “He’s managed to avoid Trump’s direct criticism while not yielding to his demands,” Mitchell remarked. This approach has prevented Trump from implementing funding cuts, even as the city operates under a budget deficit. Notably, Trump has not launched an immigration enforcement campaign in New York like the one in Minneapolis, which sparked local tensions.

Weather Challenges and Public Response

During Mamdani’s early tenure, New York faced severe winter storms. In January, the Bronx received 13.5 inches of snow, the highest total in recent years. A second blizzard in February brought nearly 20 inches to Central Park, testing the city’s emergency response. Mamdani faced backlash after 18 fatalities were reported during the first storm and subsequent cold spell.

To address the crisis, Mamdani took action, freeing hotel rooms and relocating 1,400 individuals to shelters. He also deployed 150 outreach workers to assist stranded residents. During the January event, he acknowledged the efforts of sanitation workers, who cleared streets and melted 23 million pounds of snow at eight locations. His initiatives included opening a city-owned grocery store in East Harlem, part of his affordability plan, with plans to establish five such locations by the end of his term.

Affordability Agenda and Future Goals

Central to Mamdani’s campaign was the push for universal childcare. While the full implementation is still pending, he has allocated $1.2bn to create 2,000 free spots for two-year-olds in lower-income areas by 2026. The state governor, Kathy Hochul, has pledged full funding for the initial phase, though long-term financial details remain uncertain.

Other priorities include expanding affordable food access through city-owned grocery stores. These stores, like the La Marqueta market revived by Mamdani, aim to reduce costs for residents. With a projected $30m investment, the plan highlights his focus on accessibility and equity. Mamdani still has multiple goals to address, some achievable within a short timeframe, while others require sustained effort.

“Anybody who thought he would wave a wand and get his big-picture promises done quickly, of course, that was never going to happen,”

remarked an unnamed observer, underscoring the complexity of his agenda. As Mamdani moves forward, the city watches closely to see how his vision unfolds amid both progress and lingering challenges.
