At least 25 killed in firecracker factory blast in India
An explosion at a firecracker factory in Tamil Nadu, southern India, has claimed the lives of at least 25 individuals, with four others suffering severe injuries. The incident occurred on Sunday evening at the Vanaja Fireworks Industry in Virudhunagar. Officials noted that the factory was intended to be closed, yet approximately 50 workers were present at the time of the blast.
A second explosion followed the initial one, complicating rescue efforts and adding 13 more casualties. District Collector NO Sukhaputra stated that no serious burns were reported among the injured. The exact cause of the explosion is still under investigation, as authorities work to determine what led to the disaster.
“About 25 people were working in the veranda area when the fire erupted, damaging at least three rooms and partially destroying the building,” an eyewitness recounted to BBC Tamil. The individual, who is receiving medical treatment, highlighted how the ongoing explosions within the structure slowed down rescue operations.
Police have filed a complaint against the factory’s owner and foreman, both of whom are missing. Four specialized teams are actively searching for and attempting to apprehend them. As of Monday, efforts to identify the victims are ongoing, with 22 of the 25 deceased already recognized, predominantly women.
Some reports suggest the force of the blast left multiple bodies unrecognizable due to severe charring. Such incidents are not unusual in India’s fireworks industry, which supplies products for weddings, festivals, and other celebrations. The sector has repeatedly faced scrutiny over its safety protocols.
Speaking to reporters, Sukhaputra criticized the factory for operating on a Sunday, calling it a “first violation.” While the facility holds a valid license, checks into other potential breaches are currently underway. Politicians have also responded swiftly, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing condolences to the families of the victims. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin emphasized the deep sorrow caused by the tragedy and instructed officials to provide all necessary support.
