Former Nigeria Striker Michael Eneramo Dies During Match

Nigeria’s national football federation confirmed the passing of former international player Michael Eneramo, who collapsed during a friendly game in Kaduna. The 40-year-old succumbed to a suspected cardiac arrest five minutes into the second half on Friday.

Eneramo, known for his physicality and goal-scoring prowess, earned 10 caps for the Super Eagles. His club career spanned several countries, including Tunisia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, where he became a fan favorite. In Tunisia, he was famously called “Al Dababa” (The Tank) by supporters due to his robust playstyle and contributions to Esperance’s success.

A Career Marked by Resilience and Impact

Before his international debut, Eneramo declined opportunities to play for Tunisia’s national team. He made his mark for Nigeria in a 2009 friendly against Jamaica, where he netted his first goal. A standout moment came during the 2010 World Cup qualifiers, as he scored in a 2–2 draw against Tunisia, a result pivotal for Nigeria’s qualification to the finals.

“He was a symbol of strength, determination and resolve, and created unforgettable moments,” said the four-time African champions in a statement on X.

Despite his crucial role in that draw, Eneramo was not chosen for the South African tournament. Dr Mohammed Sanusi, NFF general secretary, called his death “devastating” and expressed hope for eternal rest for the player and support for his family.

Cameroon’s Marc-Vivien Foe, Ivory Coast’s Cheick Tiote, and Ghana’s Raphael Dwamena are among those who died during matches. In 2009, a FIFA-backed medical study highlighted that black African athletes may face a higher risk of cardiac events during sports, prompting calls for improved screening.

Former Ivory Coast and Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has urged mandatory medical evaluations for all professional players in Africa. Eneramo’s untimely passing underscores the ongoing concern for player health in the region.
