Stokes says he must work differently with McCullum
Stokes Asserts Collaboration with McCullum Remains Strong
England’s Test team coaching duo, Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, faced scrutiny after the 4-1 Ashes series loss in Australia, but Stokes downplayed suggestions of discord, emphasizing the need for a renewed dynamic with the head coach. While the pair had previously delivered consistent messages, their approaches began to show divergence during the campaign.
Strategies in Contrast
Stokes urged his players to display resilience, aligning his own batting approach with that philosophy. McCullum, however, argued that England’s earlier success stemmed from a more aggressive mindset, which the team had since shifted away from. Stokes acknowledged that the team’s strategies had evolved, yet he maintained their shared goal of victory.
“I’m very confident in mine and Brendon’s ability to work together, because we’ve done it for such a long period of time now,” Stokes remarked. “But work together in a slightly different way. The main point of me and Brendon is our alignment towards winning things and making this team as good as they can be.”
Despite differing tactics, Stokes stressed their unity in purpose. “We agree 95% of the time on things, but those 5% things that we might have different views on, we talk about it between each other and then we end up getting to the place where we want to get to,” he added. “Agreeing on every single thing, that’s just impossible.”
ECB’s Review and Future Plans
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed Stokes, McCullum, and director of cricket Rob Key will retain their roles following the Ashes review. Key noted there had been no “bust-up” between Stokes and McCullum, though the ECB aims to encourage McCullum to engage with media more frequently—particularly after key matches rather than only following losses.
Stokes and McCullum’s partnership, which began in 2022, initially brought rapid results, securing 10 wins from their first 11 Tests. However, since then, England’s record has shifted to 17 losses and 16 wins. McCullum also praised Harry Brook’s leadership during the subsequent T20 World Cup, even as the duo’s messaging diverged in the aftermath of the Ashes.
“With what me and Brendon were able to achieve with the group over a four-year period, I just couldn’t imagine doing what we were trying to do with anyone else,” Stokes said. “We’re both very proud men in what we do. We put a lot of our heart and soul into this job. Brendon certainly has for the four years he’s done it so far, and hopefully we’ll still be together at the end of 2027, winning what we want to win.”
Stokes is currently recovering from a broken cheekbone sustained during an incident involving a ball while coaching Durham’s academy players in early February. This has kept him sidelined from County Championship action, with a potential return scheduled against Worcestershire on 8 May. The ECB has shared a three-minute excerpt of Stokes’ recent interview, with the full version to be released on Wednesday.
England’s performance in the Ashes was described as “feckless, reckless and legless,” highlighting the challenges the team faced. Stokes’ injury and McCullum’s upcoming visit to the UK in May precede the Test series against New Zealand in June, setting the stage for further developments in their coaching alliance.
