Kanye West Concert Canceled in Poland
On Friday, the Superauto.pl Silesian Stadium in Poland canceled a planned concert by US rapper Kanye West, known as Ye, scheduled for 19 June 2026. Venue director Adam Strzyzewski stated in a press release that the event would not proceed due to formal and legal considerations.
Controversial Stance and Apology
Ye has faced criticism for his past pro-Nazi views, which he later disavowed and apologized for, citing his bipolar disorder. He described his earlier admiration for Adolf Hitler and antisemitic remarks as stemming from a “manic episode.” In January, Ye placed a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal to distance himself from those associations, declaring, “I am not a Nazi or an antisemite” and expressing his support for Jewish people.
“The widely discussed actions of Kanye West, linked to his promotion of Nazism, are in manifest contradiction with Poland’s values,” said Culture Minister Marta Cienkowska, per AFP. She emphasized her “clearly negative position” on the June concert in Chorzow, urging organizers to avoid providing public space for those espousing a criminal ideology.
Poland’s Culture Ministry had previously indicated it would block West from performing in the country. Cienkowska highlighted the significance of the Holocaust, noting that Polish soil saw the murder of over a million Jews at Auschwitz alone during World War II. The Nazis exterminated more than three million of Poland’s 3.2 million Jewish population, with six million Jews across Europe falling victim by the war’s end.
West’s cancellation in Poland follows similar actions in the UK, where his entry was barred, and in Australia. However, he managed to perform in the US and Mexico City this year. Despite the backlash, he has yet to comment on the Polish venue’s decision.
Historical Context and Opposition
Holocaust survivors have pressed European nations to take decisive action against West, citing his controversial rhetoric. The minister’s remarks underscore Poland’s historical role as a site of Nazi atrocities, with the country’s cultural institutions seeking to align with its legacy of resistance against totalitarianism.
Previously, West released a track titled “Heil Hitler,” which is now banned on major streaming platforms. His public endorsement of Nazi ideology has sparked global debate, with critics linking his remarks to mental health struggles and others viewing them as a deliberate affront to Jewish history.
