Mental Stress Led to Anti-Doping Charge – Vondrousova

Marketa Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon women’s singles champion, faces an anti-doping charge after refusing a visit from a testing officer at her home in December 2025. The Czech player claims she was in a critical state due to sustained physical and mental strain, which caused her to act out of fear rather than intent to avoid the test.

“The recent doping control incident happened because I reached a crisis after enduring prolonged physical and mental strain,” Vondrousova shared on Instagram. “When someone rang my door late at night without properly identifying themselves or following protocol—I reacted as a person who felt scared. In that moment, it was about feeling safe, not about avoiding anything.”

Under anti-doping regulations, athletes must report their whereabouts daily for a specified hour to allow testing outside competition. If found guilty, Vondrousova could face a ban lasting up to four years. The ITIA confirmed the charge but declined to elaborate on the specifics, stating an investigation is ongoing.

Vondrousova, ranked 46th in the women’s rankings, has not competed since withdrawing from the Adelaide International in January due to shoulder pain. She missed the Australian Open with the same issue, taking a break to focus on recovery. The ITIA’s guidelines define a refusal to submit to a test without a valid reason as a doping violation.

Reflecting on her mental health, Vondrousova explained that “experts confirmed” she had experienced an acute stress reaction and generalized anxiety disorder. She also noted years of negative messages and threats had made her wary of strangers in her own space. “After what happened to Petra, we don’t take strangers at our door lightly,” she added.

Petra Kvitova, another Czech tennis star, suffered a knife attack at her home in 2016, leading to surgery and a prolonged absence from the sport. Vondrousova, who described tennis as her “world,” is now prioritizing healing. “I’m trying to slowly find my way back—both on and off the court,” she said. “Thank you to my boyfriend, my family, and everyone who has stood by me—it means more than I can explain. For now, I’m taking time to breathe and recover.”
