Mali: Explosions, Gunfire Rock Main Military Camp

Incident Details

Early Saturday morning, two powerful explosions and continuous gunfire disrupted the region surrounding Mali’s primary military facility in Kati, a suburb of the capital Bamako. According to AFP and Reuters, the incident has left the source of the blasts and shooting unclear, with no organization claiming responsibility to date.

“Soldiers were deployed to seal off roads in the vicinity,” reported a Reuters eyewitness.

Fighting Spreads

Amid the chaos, AFP noted additional clashes in Gao, the northernmost city of Mali, and Sevare, located in the central part of the country. AP also mentioned that gunfire was detected near the nation’s international airport, adding to the tension across multiple regions.

Ongoing Conflicts

Mali has endured a jihadi insurgency for over a decade, as its forces confront West African branches of al-Qaeda and Islamic State. This conflict coexists with a prolonged Tuareg-led uprising in the north, which has shaped the country’s security landscape for years.

Military Leadership

Following coups in 2020 and 2021, military leaders seized control, pledging to enhance security in the Sahel. General Assimi Goita, now the de facto ruler, has relied on Russian mercenaries for defense while initially collaborating with Western allies. However, recent developments indicate a shift toward strengthening ties with the United States.

Political Moves

Despite promises to transition power to civilians by March 2024, the military junta extended Goita’s presidential term in July 2025. The new mandate, set for five years, allows for indefinite renewal without the requirement of elections.
