Messi buys fifth-tier Spanish club Cornella
Argentine football icon Lionel Messi has taken ownership of Cornella, a small Catalan team competing in Spain’s fifth division. The 38-year-old, known for his legendary career with Barcelona, has previously secured four Champions League titles and 10 La Liga championships for the Catalan club. Currently, he plays for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, but his connection to Cornella continues as he aims to bolster the club’s future.
“Leo Messi’s arrival marks the beginning of a new chapter in the club’s history, aimed at driving both sporting and institutional growth, strengthening its foundations, and continuing to invest in talent,” said Cornella. “The project is guided by a long-term vision and a strategic plan that combines ambition, sustainability, and a strong connection to its local roots.”
Cornella, which announced the acquisition in a statement, highlighted Messi’s role in advancing local sports development. The club’s stadium holds 1,500 spectators, and it has produced notable talents like Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya and former Barcelona defender Jordi Alba. Messi’s return to the region underscores his enduring influence, even as he competes abroad.
Earlier this year, former Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, who plays for Al-Nassr in Saudi Pro League, invested 25% in Almeria, another Spanish team. This trend of retired pros acquiring clubs has gained momentum, with questions arising about why such moves are happening now. Messi’s purchase of Cornella fits into this pattern, blending personal legacy with community impact.
A Career Rooted in Catalonia
Messi moved to Spain at 13 and made his Barcelona debut in 2004 at 17. Over nearly two decades with the club, he set a record with 672 goals in 778 matches before joining Paris St-Germain in 2021. His latest venture, Cornella, reflects a deeper commitment to nurturing local talent and sustaining football in the region.
