Apology to runners for too-long half marathon
Apology to Runners for Extended Half Marathon Route
Event Organizers Acknowledge Mistake in Distance
Following an investigation, Run For All, the organizers of the Coventry Half Marathon, issued an apology to participants after confirming the event exceeded the intended 13.1 miles (21 kilometers) by 512 meters. The oversight, detailed in an email shared with competitors, emphasized the organizers’ regret over the discrepancy.
“Although we are proud of the achievements of those who completed the race, we must recognize that today’s course surpassed the 13.1-mile mark. Like you, we are frustrated by this error and offer our sincere apologies. We take full responsibility for the miscalculation.”
The error stemmed from a mispositioned turning point, which added 256 meters to the route. This miscalculation caused the total distance to exceed half a kilometre. Runners will be provided with adjusted finish times based on the correct 13.1-mile benchmark. Additionally, they will be offered a reduced entry fee for the 2027 event as a gesture of goodwill.
Commitment to Addressing the Issue
In their statement, Run For All expressed hope that the apology would be accepted and pledged to conduct a thorough internal review. They also invited participants to return for future races, aiming to correct the mistake and improve the experience. The BBC has reached out to the organizers for further clarification.
