Blackburn Legend Tony Parkes Passes Away at 76

Tony Parkes, a revered figure in Blackburn Rovers history, has died at the age of 76. The former player and coach was deeply connected to the club, spending over three decades in roles both on and off the pitch. His legacy as a midfielder included more than 400 appearances, alongside contributions as a coach under 16 different managers, such as Kenny Dalglish during Rovers’ triumphant Premier League campaign of 1994-95.

A Tough-Tackling Midfielder

In an obituary, Blackburn Rovers highlighted Parkes’ relentless work ethic and physicality. “A tough-tackling and tireless midfield grafter, who was prepared to do the unspectacular leg work in the middle of the park, he also liked to run with the ball and was a difficult man to stop in full flight,” the tribute read. Furthermore, the club noted his ability to contribute from a central role, describing him as having “a centre-forward’s eye for goal” and scoring key goals during his playing days.

From Non-League to Premiership

Parkes began his journey with Rovers in May 1970, moving from non-league Buxton. He played a pivotal part in securing the third-tier title in the 1974-75 season. After retiring in 1982, having netted 46 goals in 409 games, he joined as a first-team coach under Bobby Sexton. His coaching tenure coincided with the club’s rise from the second division to Premiership champions in 1994-95, under Jack Walker’s ownership.

Later Career Moves

Following his time at Blackburn, Parkes took on scouting duties for Leicester City and became assistant to Simon Grayson at Blackpool. His coaching career concluded in a caretaker capacity at Blackpool during the 2008-09 season, guiding the team to a 16th-place finish in the Championship. Before this, he had six caretaker spells as manager for Rovers, ending his tenure in 2004 after Graeme Souness departed for Newcastle.

Alzheimer’s Diagnosis and Legacy

Parkes was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2020, and his daughter Natalie confirmed his passing. Reflecting on the condition, he once remarked,

“It is hard to put two words together.”

Blackburn Rovers will honor his memory with a special tribute before their final Championship match of the season on Saturday, 2 May, against Leicester. Former striker Alan Shearer, a Match of the Day pundit, shared his condolences on X: “RIP Tony. A great man.”
