Pietersen criticises Cook for Bethell comments
Kevin Pietersen has reignited a long-standing rivalry with Alastair Cook by championing Jacob Bethell’s participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The former England batter, who played 104 Tests between 2005 and 2014, argues that the IPL offers unparalleled development opportunities for players like Bethell, despite Cook’s recent criticism. In a recent social media post, Pietersen dismissed Cook’s remarks, emphasizing the global exposure the tournament provides.
Coventry’s critique and Pietersen’s rebuttal
Alastair Cook, who led England when Pietersen’s international career concluded in 2014, stated on the Stick to Cricket podcast that Bethell has yet to demonstrate his worth in the IPL. “He’s not doing anything,” Cook said, suggesting Bethell should return to county cricket to support the England team. Pietersen, however, countered with a sharp response on X: “Alastair Cook has absolutely NO IDEA what it’s like to be in the IPL. What it’s like to always be around the best players in the world.” He further asserted that Cook’s opinion holds little weight, urging Bethell to stay in India for growth.
Following the 2013-14 Ashes, Pietersen and Cook clashed over the decision to end Pietersen’s England career. The incident sparked a bitter debate, with Pietersen consistently advocating for the IPL’s value, even as English cricket remained skeptical. Cook, who never participated in the IPL, ended his Test career in 2018, holding the record for England’s highest run-scorer with 12,472 not out—a title since surpassed by Joe Root. Cook’s knighthood in 2019 added to his legacy, though his views on the IPL have since been challenged.
Bethell’s stance and future prospects
Jacob Bethell, 22, is poised to earn a Test spot after scoring a century in the final Ashes Test in January. However, his absence from Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s lineup this season means he hasn’t played any cricket since March 5. Despite his recent county match for Warwickshire in August 2024, Pietersen believes the IPL’s intensity is more beneficial. “By practising with the best players in the world. By watching very closely the best players in the world. By speaking to the best coaches in the world,” he listed, highlighting the tournament’s role in shaping talent.
Bethell, who made his debut at number three, expressed confidence in his ability to open if needed. “I feel better now than I was a month ago, just from getting time around the guys over here,” he remarked, citing the IPL’s high standards. The left-hander also stressed the exposure gained from playing in front of crowds and under intense scrutiny. “Every nets session, you’ve got hundreds of eyes on you, be it your coaches or the other players who are also looking at you, going, ‘Is this guy good? Is he not?’” he said, reinforcing his commitment to the IPL.
